A Chat with Motivational Mental Health Campaigner, Speaker Ben Smith.

27th Aug 2021

Ben Smith – Anti-Bullying Campaigner, Mental Health Speaker.

Growing up, Ben wasn’t a runner, in fact, he wasn’t very sporty at all. He suffered at the hands of bullies throughout his time at school, and with his confidence and self-esteem knocked, he led a life dictated to him by others. However, after suffering from a Transient Ischemic Attack (aka. an “incomplete stroke” at 29) Ben, who was 17 stone at the time, felt he needed to change the way he led his life for both his physical and mental health.

Today, Ben is an inspirational keynote speaker who has delivered motivational talks to audiences all over the world, covering important issues of physical wellness, resilience, LGBTQ+ and mental wellbeing.

The 401 Challenge.

In 2015, Ben took on the incredible challenge of running 401 marathons in 401 days. Over the course of the challenge, he raised £330,000 for two anti-bullying charities. And from here the 401 Challenge was born. His drive and motivation have inspired thousands to embark on such adventures to raise money for mental health charities.

As a motivational keynote speaker, Ben now shares his own mental health experiences, from bullying at school to LGBTQ matters, all with the aim of helping everyone to ‘find your happy.’

In 2022, Ben will take on his next extraordinary adventure – running and cycling 14,000 miles across America in just 104 days to raise £500,000 for mental health support charities.

With Mental Health Awareness Day coming up this October (10th), Ben spoke to our Great British Speakers’ director Jane Farnham about mental resilience – his experience with depression, attempted suicide, sexuality and finding happiness…
